Graphic design in use, that's what it's there for. Thanks to the people in the images, who give meaning to the design, and who are part of the community that makes this event unique. Among others, the director Bertrand Mandico, who had a retrospective in this edition; the director João Gonzalez, who provided live music for films chosen by him in an unforgettable Stereo session; the director of the award-winning film Os Caçadores, David Pinheiro Vicente and his producer Luis Urbano; the British artist Morgan Quaintace, with an exhibition at Solar.

“History is a central element in this 31st edition of Curtas Vila do Conde. At the start of a new decade of life, Curtas celebrates its journey so far, underlining its importance for Portugal’s film history and for the individual stories of so many cinephiles who have been to Vila do Conde to rediscover the magic of cinema. (…)” (www.curtas.pt)
Poster’s composition orbits around a closeup of the sculpture Le Baiser (The Kiss, circa 1882) by Auguste Rodin (1840–1917). “The Kiss originally represented Paolo and Francesca, two characters borrowed, once again, from Dante’s Divine Comedy: slain by Francesca’s husband who surprised them as they exchanged their first kiss, the two lovers were condemned to wander eternally through Hell.” (www.musee-rodin.fr)

“Measure for Measure, written between 1603 and 1604, is seen as one of Shakespeare's problem plays due to its shift in mood. Vienna is beset with brothels and loose morality, so it's up to the Duke to provide some divine intervention.”

A book by Domingos Tavares. A discreet man, with serene behavior and certain convictions, António Correia da Silva was a typical Porto citizen, creator of emblematic architectures of the city. His professional activity has never been properly valued. As an exception, no one disputes the meaning of the municipal affirmation of the Paços do Concelho building, at the end of Avenida dos Aliados, or the importance of the Bolhão Market as a promoter of civic life promoted by the liberal bourgeoisie of the First Republic. The critical discourse about his work has always revealed some mistrust regarding the programmatic assumptions of those architectures, forgetting the conceptual coherence that originated them. As for other less central works, such as the São Roque da Lameira Slaughterhouse or the Foz do Douro Municipal Fire Department garage, they have been forgotten as a mark of an era. But Correia da Silva did not disappear from the narrative of the architecture of Porto, because those two emblematic works soon touched the heart of the people, who took them as the identity mark of the civic center.

Every two years, in the heat of summer, thousands of people from different countries and cultures make their way to the border region of Idanha-a-Nova in Portugal. They come together for the Boom Festival, where they sway with psychedelic sensuality to the sound of Trance music. Photographer Valter Vinagre has accompanied these magical encounters, portraying the place and its temporary inhabitants, their constructions, desires and dreams. This book crystallizes the convulsion of those moments into a possible order, rediscovering gazes and bodies in another space and time. Texts by António Guerreiro and Joaquim Moreno decode the images and hermetic organization of the book, offering threads for readers to follow as they lose and find themselves again in the labyrinths of the imagination.

Curtas Vila do Conde: 25 Anos, 25 Histórias (25 years, 25 stories), is a celebratory book composed of 25 texts written by various personalities (film critics, musicians, directors, writers, etc.) who passed by the International Film Festival Curtas Vila do Conde. These texts reveal the short story of Curtas, one that was told only to the ears of some. They are memories of many episodes of those who were inside the festival. The texts of the book are confidences and memories that intersect with the experience of their authors in Vila do Conde as guests and participants of past editions of the festival.

A book edited by André Tavares and Diogo Seixas Lopes, divided in four chapters is the portuguese version for the publication The Form of Form: “What is architectural form? What does architectural form mean? And why is it so significant today? Well, from our perspective, architecture is a visual construct with a full field of responsibilities and hidden values. Even before we think about architecture as a means of design, architecture is a type of knowledge. After all the tensions and frictions that happen during the physical and social transformations of our cities and landscapes, when all the fuss is over, and the different agents who contributed to change have left the field of play, what is left is a built form. Citizens live among forms; architectural forms have endured from the past and they will populate the future”. Published by Lisbon Architecture Triennale.
